Starting Strength App FAQ

Everything you need to know about the Starting Strength app and training program.

What is Starting Strength?

Starting Strength is a strength training program developed by Mark Rippetoe that focuses on five barbell lifts: the squat, bench press, deadlift, overhead press, and power clean. It uses linear progression, meaning you add weight to the bar every workout, making it the most efficient program for building strength as a beginner.

Is this the official Starting Strength app?

Yes! This app is officially licensed by The Aasgaard Company, which owns the Starting Strength brand. The training methodology, exercise descriptions, and programming are all based directly on the Starting Strength book and methods.

What equipment do I need?

You need access to a barbell, a squat rack, a bench, and weight plates. A basic home gym setup or any commercial gym with free weights will work. You don't need machines or special equipment—just the fundamental tools for barbell training.

Is Starting Strength only for beginners?

The Novice Linear Progression is designed for beginners, but the app also includes Phase 2, Female Training, Advanced Novice, and a Free Log for post-novice lifters. Anyone who hasn't maximized their strength potential can benefit.

How long are the workouts?

A typical Starting Strength workout takes 45-75 minutes, including warmups. You'll train three days per week (like Monday, Wednesday, Friday), giving your body time to recover and grow stronger between sessions.

How often should I train?

The program is designed for three training days per week with at least one rest day between sessions. Training more frequently doesn't mean faster progress—recovery is when you actually get stronger.

What exercises are included?

The core lifts are: Squat, Bench Press, Deadlift, Overhead Press, and Power Clean (or Barbell Row as a substitute). The app guides you through proper warmup sets and work sets for each lift.

How is this different from other workout apps?

Unlike generic workout trackers, this app is built specifically for the Starting Strength method. It calculates your warmups automatically, tracks linear progression, detects stalls, and recommends deloads—all based on the proven Starting Strength methodology.

I used the original Starting Strength app. Why should I switch to this version?

This is a completely rebuilt app with modern design, faster performance, and features that the original app never had—including automatic stall detection, smart deload recommendations, progress projections, plate math, and an integrated training guide. If you have training data in the legacy app, you can import it directly into the new app so you don't lose any of your history.
